HISTORIC MATERIALS MANAGEMENT

WHAT IS HISTORIC MATERIALS MANAGEMENT?

Re:Purpose Savannah believes that responsibly salvaging reusable historic materials at the end of a building’s life-cycle is a key part of the solution to both the loss of culturally significant resources and the environmental crisis. But once historic materials are rescued from the landfill, what happens next?

There isn’t much guidance addressing how to handle historic building materials once they are removed from their original setting. To address the gap, Re:Purpose Savannah created the following publications—funded by a Preservation Technology and Training Grant from the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT)—to document best practices and help to ensure that salvaged historic materials remain viable for reuse.
